The Macedonian Cultural Treasury macro project aims to use the existing personal archives of experts in the field of cultural heritage through which it will achieve its set goals in the direction of introducing modern methods in the direction of digitalization of cultural heritage (internet, 3D, HR, etc. )

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

MACEDONIAN CULTURAL TREASURY
(research, identification, photo and digital documentation)

The treasury of the cultural heritage of Macedonia, created during the medieval and later eras, until the beginning of the last century, includes a large number of monuments belonging to different historical eras and reflecting the fertile creative ideas of the region and the diverse stylistic and artistic concepts and trends. Byzantine and post-Byzantine sacral monuments and Islamic sacral and profane objects, are a testimony to the long continuity of the artistic tradition of the Macedonian region, where for more than a millennium there was a transfer of ideas and artistic concepts, which reflected the diverse religious and national currents, united in the creative act of artistic creation. By their architectural characteristics and specifics and by their artistic qualities and achievements, the Byzantine, post-Byzantine, Islamic and Renaissance monuments belong to the general cultural milieu of the Balkan region and testify to the valuable contribution of the Macedonian territory in the formation of the unique artistic treasury of Southeast Europe.

The macro-project Macedonian Cultural Treasury aims to utilize the existing personal archives of experts in the field of cultural heritage, through which it will achieve its set goals in the direction of introducing modern methods for the digitization of cultural heritage (internet, 3D, HR, etc.).

The Center for Cultural and Spiritual Heritage, for the needs of implementing the macro-project Macedonian Cultural Treasury, undertakes the obligation to take care of the “Darko Nikolovski Cultural Heritage Fund” – a photo archive and scientific library – which represents one of the richest and most significant funds containing about 300,000 digital photographs/slides and at the same time a personal library of over 2000 individual monographic editions and other professional literature from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine area of the soil of Macedonia and the Balkans.

The “Darko Nikolovski Cultural Heritage Fund” also includes the family library and photo archive of his parents Antonie Nikolovski and Zagorka Rasolkoska – Nikolovska, which includes over 3000 monographs and other professional literature collected over a period of 80 years, since the establishment of the institutions for the protection of cultural heritage in Macedonia (1950), during their working lives as art historians at the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments (today NI NCC- Skopje) and the Museum of Macedonia in Skopje. With the aim of studying, systematizing and presenting the cultural and historical heritage based on the personal archives of two generations of art historians who worked in the field of cultural heritage protection, MA Darko Nikolovski and his parents, prof. Dr. Antonie Nikolovski and Zagorka Rasolkoska – Nikolovska who left in their legacy one of the richest collections of professional literature and also a photo archive from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine area in Macedonia and the Balkans.

These prominent figures, who spent their working lives in the field of the protection of cultural heritage and museology of the soil of Macedonia and the surrounding Balkan countries, have, in their long and fruitful creative lives, created their own personal photo archives for their research and authorship engagements. We appreciate that this photo documentation, which is of irreplaceable authenticity for cultural monuments, will remain forgotten by time if organized measures are not taken for their collection, digitization and publication to the wider professional public.

The objectives of this program are:

– the digital presentation of photo archives from cultural heritage will contribute to broader education and awareness of the public for their authentic preservation and protection of cultural monuments, their advanced study, presentation and creative resuscitation

– identifying, collecting and publishing the personal photo archives of our first researchers/pioneers in the field of cultural heritage protection in Macedonia in order to preserve in the collective memory and the importance of cultural heritage as a universal value

– Modern methods for studying, systematizing and presenting the cultural and historical heritage based on personal archives

– opportunity for collecting and presenting professional libraries and photo archives and other experts in this field who have the same idea of sharing their archives

– Presentation of the photo archive on a specialized internet portal
– Introducing 3D and HR (Extended Reality) technology in the field of cultural heritage

The intended goals will be realized through the following research and educational projects:

Documentation of the sacred heritage (architecture, painting and iconography) (the need for urgent documentation of the sacred heritage as a first step towards their protection is caused by the irreversible process of mass migration of villages to urban centers, whereby the monumental heritage is left to the ravages of time in the absence of complete neglect by the owners and official institutions that have the responsibility for their protection and presentation)

– Corpus of architectural and wall painting in Macedonia 9-19th century

– Digital catalog – Icons from the Macedonian collection in cultural monuments

– Architectural and iconographic groups from Macedonia

– Monitoring of cultural heritage

– Center for rapid interventions for documentation of cultural heritage in danger / Emergency documentation of culturally significant buildings
